Important Deadlines

PhD students are invited to submit applications to the AMCIS 2005 Doctoral Consortium.  The consortium, co-chaired by Varun Grover and Rajiv Sabherwal,  will be held on August 11, 2005 as a pre-conference activity in conjunction with AMCIS 2005 (August 11-14, Omaha, NE).   The consortium offers an opportunity for Ph.D. students making progress on their dissertation research to share and discuss their research with peers and faculty mentors.  The consortium will consist of multiple concurrent small group sessions facilitated by experienced faculty members with expertise in the topical area or methodological approach.  In addition, there will be opportunities to network with peers and faculty, learn about research and publishing strategies, and engage in discussions on research, teaching, jobs and careers.

The consortium will be held at the Arbor Day Farm Lied Lodge and Conference Center. This is a full service facility and offers 144 well-appointed guestrooms featuring work-study areas and data-ports, a fine dining restaurant, a cocktail lounge, an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and fitness center. Walking trails, jogging, and nearby golf are available for relaxation. Accepted candidates will be expected to arrive by 7pm on the previous night.  The one night room cost for all doctoral students selected for the AMCIS 2005 Doctoral Consortium will be fully subsidized through the generosity of the conference sponsors.

Eligibility

Students wishing to participate in the Doctoral Consortium must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must be studying Information Systems (or a closely related discipline) and plan to address an Information Systems-related topic for their dissertation.
  • Students must be on-track to complete the dissertation and participate in the job market during the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 school year (or else be finished with the dissertation during the summer of 2006). The faculty recommendation letter (described above) essentially certifies this intent and is required.
  • Students should not be currently employed in a faculty position.

Application Process

An application package must be sent via e-mail directly to Varun Grover (vgrover@clemson.edu)  (cc to Rajiv Sabherwal at sabherwal@umsl.edu) with Subject Line "AMCIS2005 Doctoral Consortium." In your e-mail, please indicate any other doctoral consortiums that you have attended in the past or are planning to attend in the near future.

The package should consist of two essential items as separate Word or pdf files:

1. A faculty nomination letter.  This letter should include a brief description of the student's intended research area and probable research methodology.  The faculty must also provide an assessment of the candidate's chances of completing his/her dissertation and successfully participating in the job market during the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 school year. Because the consortium will have a size limitation, participants described as being likely to complete their dissertations by the end of summer 2006 will be given preference over students described as being unlikely to complete their dissertation.

2. An abstract (not to exceed 5 double spaced pages including references and any figures, tables, etc.) describing the student’s dissertation.

The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2005

Review Procedure

The Consortium Chairs and outside reviewers will review each submission. The review process will focus on selecting high quality, well-constructed proposals and on identifying the most appropriate "track" for the topical and methodological area being addressed by the candidate. There is no limit to the number of students who can participate in the consortium from a single school. The overall size of the Consortium, however, is generally kept small and the quality of the proposal and the strength of the faculty recommendations are important. Accepted candidates will be expected to provide a final paper before the consortium. This will be published in the conference proceedings.
